Our Philosophy

We believe that karate is primarily a system of self defence. It is not a sport for children to play, but an art for adults to study.

Sports karate is governed by a complex set of rules but there are no rules in a street fight. There are only survivors and victims.
At Manchester Budokan, we study a practical martial art.

We believe that karate that does not work in a real situation is meaningless.

Our karate works.

We are not so arrogant as to believe, however, that we have a monopoly on effective martial arts. We are constantly open to different approaches. We welcome information from all martial artists about their arts and studies, and about any courses they may host.
